FALCAO MISSES PENALTY

An own goal from Eric Abidal and a calm finish from David Ducourtioux handed Valenciennes a shock 2-1 win against Monaco at Stade Louis II on Friday.

Abidal turned Arthur Masuako's cross into his own goal on the half-hour mark before Ducourtioux slotted home from a quick break away in the second half to give the visitors a fully deserved two-goal lead.

Radamel Falcao saw his penalty saved late in the second half before James Rodriguez turned home an impressive header to give his side hope, but Claudio Ranieri's side ultimately slumped to their first league defeat since the loss to Lille in early November.

The visitors started brightly and had the best of the early chances, with Mathieu Dossevi being denied by Danijel Subasic from close range.

Valenciennes continued to impress and earned their reward on 28 minutes. Masuako scuffed a cross into the area after a break from a Monaco set piece and Abidal could only steer the ball beyond the helpless Subasic.

Monaco responded and Layvin Kurzawa saw his finish ruled out for offside before the lively Anthony Martial was denied a penalty after being tripped from behind and Joao Moutinho fired a free kick wide.

Valenciennes made them pay early in the second half, with Ducourtioux collecting the ball in acres of space on the counterattack before calmly slotting the ball beneath Subasic to send the visiting support into raptures.

Falcao spurned the chance to halve the deficit when his tame penalty was saved by the impressive Nicolas Penneteau, but James gave his side some hope when he steered home a clever header following a corner.

The Colombian thought he had snatched a point in the dying minutes but his tap-in was ruled out for offside as Monaco missed out on the chance to move temporarily to the top of Ligue 1 ahead of Paris Saint-Germain's clash with third-placed Lille this weekend.

MWANASOKA ATUPWA NJE NCHINI MISRI

Yeye mwenyewe aling'olewa kutoka uongozini mwezi Julai.

MA

Los Blancos raced into a three-goal lead at Vallecas, with Cristiano Ronaldo striking either side of a Karim Benzema header, but they were left hanging on at the end after conceding two penalties in as many minutes in the second half, both of which were converted by Jonathan Viera.

Given Madrid shipped three goals in midweek against Sevilla and have conceded more than any other side in La Liga's top half, Pepe freely admits that Madrid's vulnerability at the back has become a serious cause for concern among the players.

"We are all down about it," the 30-year-old centre-half told his club's official website.

"In the second half, we didn't have the right intensity but the most important thing is to recognise it, and that it has happened in the last two matches and cannot happen again.

"But I think that we were very good in the first half. The team worked hard, with a lot of intensity, we had control and we moved well.

"The coach told us at half-time that we had to keep going because Rayo Vallecano are a mentally strong team.

"But they came out very strongly after the break at home in front of their fans and picked up the pace, which we struggled more against.

"The most important thing, though, is that we took the three points at a difficult ground to win at."

Pepe also confessed that Madrid's players might have had one eye on Tuesday night's Champions League showdown with Juventus in Turin having surged into a three-goal lead against their neighbours shortly after the break.

"We made mistakes in the second half," the Portugal international continued. "We should have had the match under control and maybe even started to think about Juventus.

"I think we're doing well, though. We scored three goals at a difficult ground to come to.

"We got an important win before a tough match. Real Madrid go out to win wherever we play and that is what we'll keep doing."

DANTE RESUMES BAYERN TRAINING

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has received some encouraging news on the injury front as experienced defender Dante has resumed regular training after a brief spell on the sidelines due to injury.

The Brazil international, 30, picked up a foot injury in his side's win over Mainz two weeks ago and has since been out of action.

Dante consequently missed the Bundesliga clash against Hertha Berlin and the Champions League match versus Viktoria Plzen, but he could be considered for selection against Hoffenheim at the weekend after resuming squad training on Wednesday.

The centre-back has developed into a key player at Bayern since joining them from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2012. He has made 15 appearances for FCB in all competitions so far this term.

Meanwhile, Arjen Robben and Toni Kroos are both in contention to feature against Hoffenheim, despite the pair being substituted early in the first half against Hertha with groin injuries.

Robben told the club's official website: "It's getting better day by day, but we will not take any risks."

ISLA-I WANT TO REPAY JUVENTUS

Mauricio Isla is keen to repay Juventus for their faith in him following his return to full fitness.

The 25-year-old joined the Serie A champions from Udinese in 2012, but initially saw his opportunities limited as he struggled for form following knee surgery.

However, having started Juve's last two Serie A fixtures, Isla is now determined to make a positive impact and give something back to the reigning champions.

"I had a nasty injury and everyone here at Juventus has been very patient with me," Isla told reporters.

"I have always given my all, but I need to continue working hard to repay people for the faith they have shown.

"[Antonio] Conte decided that I would stay at this club and I'm happy to be here, but I need to show that on the field of play."

Isla has made eight appearances for Juventus so far this season.

I WASN'T CARELLESS-PATO

The former AC Milan striker took to the spot with his team trailing 3-2 on penalties, knowing a miss would send Gremio to the semi-finals, and promptly sent a low chipped effort into the waiting arms of Dida.

The penalty was saved by the Brazilian keeper with ease, but Pato insists he thought the 'Paneka' would work against his former team-mate.

“I accept all criticism for my mistake,” he said in a statement released by the club. “But I want to make clear that I was not careless or indifferent to defeat.

“I worked many years with Dida [in Milan].

“I was sure he would come out before I hit it, as he has done the other four times, getting to the corner against Romarinho and Alessandro.

“Knowing this, I chose to hit in the middle of the goal, to account for this. I thought this was the best option to score the goal.”
